          Everyone has secrets. Some of us are secretive about everything that we do. Others are an open book. When it comes to health and beauty concerns, each of us have a different viewpoint on the subject of how to stay healthy and look beautiful . Even men can be beautiful, or at least handsome !!          When we get into this discussion, a number of different topics arise. Diet, exercise, vitamins, minerals, sleep habits and even cosmetics enter into the discussion. Let's focus on one topic-diet.
          Many years ago, my wife and I decided to eat healthy. For us, this meant avoiding excessive salt and fat intake. Of couse, this meant avoiding prepared foods and fried foods. It meant being aware of what you ate and how much you ate. Vegetables, fruits and rice became our staple foods . Whole grain breads and unsalted nuts replaced white breads and fatty meats. Chicken took the front stage. Fish was not an option because of my allergies and my wifes' dislike of seafood. Overall, we continue to eat healthy to this day, and take daily vitamins and supplements. We drink plenty of water and avoid soda, while pomegranate 
juice starts our day. We are not overweight, our blood pressure is good, and 
except for some arthritis, which we treat with glucosamine, I believe that our 
health is good. Do you eat a healthy diet ? Do you take vitamins? What is your dietary regimen and what are your "secrets" ?

                                     POMEGRANATE JUICE


          As I had mentioned earlier, I enjoy pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice tastes great. It is full of antioxidant power. Pomegranate juice contains vitamins C, E, A, and folic acid in good amounts. It has three times the antioxidant power of red wine, and has been shown to help prevent heart disease.  It is also more potent than green tea.
          Studies have shown that pomegranate juice can help to thin the blood, reduce plaque buildup in arteries, and lower bad cholesterol. Other studies have shown that pomegranate juice can help in the fight against breast and skin cancer.  Osteoarthritis, a condition where enzymes destroy body cartilage, can be treated by drinking pomegranate juice. The antioxidants in this delicious juice are very helpful in combating disease when taken on a daily basis. It should be part of a healthy diet plan.
          Now, here is my take. As I said, I drink pomegranate juice every morning. I also take aspirin every morning.  We know that pomegranate juice reduces blood pressure and so does aspirin.  It would seem that I am getting a "double" control of my blood pressure. Aspirin is not right for everyone. Consult your physician. But, I would guess that he will recommend pomegranate juice also. I also enjoy green tea. Not so crazy about wine, but there seems to be enough antioxidant action going on !!! Don't you think ?                                                     I LIKE TO DRINK !

          Tea that is  ! To be more precise, turmeric tea. Just take a little turmeric and add to hot water. Sweeten if neccesary. It makes a great aside from conventional tea. But, why turmeric tea ? Isn't it a little odd ?

          Not at all, and there is method to my madness. Turmeric is in the ginger family. It has a peppery  taste, while being warm and bitter. It smells like orange and ginger mixed. It is an important ingredient of curry and ballpark mustard. 
          Turmeric comes from the curcuma longa root. It has been used for centuries in Chinese and Indian medicine. It has anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, the major ingredient of turmeric, has been shown to be the medicinal agent. It also helps to inhibit cancer cell growth, especially in the colon where cells reproduce rapidly.
          Turmeric is rich in manganese , iron and B6. So, why do I like it so much?
Together with boswellia and glucosamine, the trio pack a potent attack against arthritis.
           Try it for yourself. It sure has helped my joints. As always, consult a physician when in doubt about interactions with medications.

                                                   ALOE VERA COCKTAIL ?

          Everyone is familiar with using aloe vera lotion. But, have you ever considered drinking aloe vera juice ? I must admit that the taste is a bit odd, but not repulsive. There are a number of good reasons to drink aloe vera like I do. First of all, the juice is packed with vitamins.

                                                                   B6
                                                                   B12
                                                                   C
                                                                   E  and  folic acid , and niacin.
    The juice also contains calcium, potassium, magnesuium, iron, copper and zinc.

Drinking aloe vera daily helps your digestive tract. Bowel movements are improved and protein absorption increases. If you have heartburn, aloe is better than an antacid pill. It is also good for your teeth and gums. Aloe helps to maintain good skin health and boosts the immune system.
                     Did I fail to mention 8 essential amino acids ?
Certain amino acids cannot be produced by the human body. These essential amino acids are needed to build protein. Drinking aloe vera juice supplys your body with these building blocks.
          There is some evidence to suggest that aloe may help with joint health and is a natural anti-inflammatory. What a drink ? You have to try some. I like to mix it with other juices.

                                                     SAVOY CABBAGE

          Do you like cabbage ? Well, if you do then I have a great type for you. There are four types of cabbage: green, savoy, red and napa. The one I like the best is savoy. Savoy is the crinkled and wrinkled looking type. The leaves have large "veins".

          Savoy can be bought year round, but you will find it mostly in late autumn and spring. It has a better taste than gren cabbage. Also, if you are interested in natutral laxatives, then savoy may be the answer for you. As you know, it is not a bad idea to eat cabbage anyway, since it is recommended that everyone eat several servings of vegetables and fruits daily to maintain blood pressure.

                                      Hangover anyone ?

       Have you ever had a hangover ?  What a party, hey !!!!

There are many remedies for a hangover, including drinking pickle juice...my favorite. Some people say that eating an apple on an empty stomach does the trick. In any case, a hangover involves loss of body fluids, vitamins and minerals.

If you want to feel better, you need to replenish the water you have lost. Drinking water or fruit juice helps alot.   Taking vitamins is also a good idea. But, avoid coffee... to much caffeine and the coffee makes you urinate more causing more dehydration. Drink OJ instead.  Gatorade or a Power drink...even Pedialyte is good to replenish electrolytes.

And... get some sleep. Maybe even have a "hair of the dog" to make you feel better.  Avoid aspirin. Aspirin is a blood thinner just like alcohol. Acetominophen or ibuprofen aren't good also. The former can cause liver damage, and the latter can cause stomach bleeding.

         Everyone knows the dangers of overexposure to UV rays.


                        There are three categories of UV rays.

                                    UVB
                                    UVC
 

              UVB rays pass through the atmosphere and affect the epidermal layer of our skin.
              UVA rays  are larger wavelength waves and are responsible for only 15 % of sunburn.
 
                  UVA rays are like a sunlamp.

                                                 UVC rays are absorbed by the atmoshere.

                                               Burns can lead to blistering , chills, and fever.



                                                 To combat symptoms of sunburn:


                                         a) splash with cold water
                                         b) take aspirin
                                         c) intake fluids


                                                       Overexposure can lead to melanoma. 

      MELANOMA is a malignant form
                   of skin cancer.
       Melanoma is a raised and dark
         colored freckling on the skin.
  Another risk is the development of actinic keratoses. This is a sun induced
       growth on the hands, face and forehead. It is usually not cancerous. 

  Did you know that sunburn can cause cataracts and other diseases of the eye ?

       It can also affect the immune system and the efficacy of white blood cells.

                       UVB rays are the worst between 10 AM and 4 PM.
       Even cloudy days can be dangerous because 80 % of UVB rays pass

         Anthocyanins are responsible for the red

   colors found in plants. Actually, all recorded plant

    colors except for green are due to anthocyanins.

           These molecules are water soluble.

    In plants, their function is to attract insects, and

   they serve as a UV screen , protecting the plant

                              from sunlight.

       They also taste bad to animals and act as a

                              anti-feedent.     

.   For humans, eating plants rich in anthocyanins

                     has antioxidant benefits.

            Ingestion causes an increased blood

            antioxidant capacity. But, it is not due

      directly from anthocyanins, but the production

                              of uric acid

                        during metabolism.

                                Fel d 1 ?

 

  People who are allergic to cats, think that the fur is the problem.

                     It is not the problem.

      The problem is a glycoprotein called Fel d 1 that is found in

       cat saliva and is secretred by the skin. When you pet a cat,

       or the cat licks you the protein is trasmitted. The protein is

        an allergen, and sensitive individuals will have a reaction.

          Exposure causes the body to produce immunoglobin E

                                  which is an antibody.

           The amtibody triggers the production of histamines.

      Histamines cause capillaries to relax and smooth muscle

                                      tissue to relax.

            Areas around the eyes, nose and throat become

                                 sensitive to irritants.

                You can reduce the allergic reaction by :

                          washing the cat 2X a week

                               choose female cats

                                neutered male cats

                                   short hair cats

       Hypoallergenic means having a decreased likelihood

                             of an allergic reaction.

                        Cats are not hypoallergenic.

            However, Allerca claims to have produced a

                         hypoallergenic cat through

                               selective breeding.

                               Insect Bites

           Insect bites are very common during the
   summer months of July and August, The bites result
  in redness and swelling. There may even be an allergic
                        reaction to the bite.
   Arthropods live on land and have 6 legs. Three quarters
 of known animal life are insects. There are about 5 to 10
                   millions species of insects. 
           The greatest number of species are:

                                  beetles
                        butterflies and moths
                         ants, bees , wasps
                                true flies
      A severe reaction to an insect bite is called

                           ANAPHYLAXIS.
   
                  This reaction can result in:
                  
                                   hives
                               wheezing
                        shortness of breath
                          unconsciousness
                  or............death !!!
 
                       Treatments include:

                                    ice
                           antihistamines
                           calamine lotion
           or......contacting medical assistance.

          If there is a history of severe reactions
   to insect bites, a anaphylaxis kit that includes a
          epinephrine injector should be carried
